Garmin Forerunner 305

Many people have been asking me why I bought the Garmin 305? What so good about this Forerunner 305?

There are simply too many reasons that made me fall in love with this Garmin 305 (aka Forerunner 305), namely its cool look, supreme functionalities and superb performance.

Anyway, I have come out with a list of 13 reasons why this Forerunner 305 has become my beloved running partner.

13 Reasons Why I Love My Garmin Forerunner 305

1. The Look of Garmin Forerunner 305

I like the look of Garmin 305. I find it so cool as it looks different from the ordinary runners watches or other Garmin running watch. I like things with look that is UNIQUE and DIFFERENT! And Garmin 305 has this sleek look.

2. The Display Screen of Garmin 305

Forerunner 305 Display

Garmin 305 is slightly bigger than a traditional running watch, because it has a widescreen display. Together with the high resolution, it is very easy to read the data off the widescreen even when I am running under a densely shaded path. Before having this Forerunner 305, I found difficulty reading the data off my watch even while running under the bright sunny sky, because the screen was small and the resolution was low.

By the way, though Garmin 305 is bigger than normal sport watch, it rests comfortably on my wrist. It is not bulky or heavy.

3. Layout of Buttons on Garmin 305

There are 7 buttons on Garmin 305. The frequently used are the “Start/Stop” & “Lap/Reset” buttons which are conveniently seated at the front. The remaining 5 buttons are located at both sides of the watch. I hate sport watches with so many buttons clustered at the surface of the watch, it looks messy and confusing. Forerunner 305 is neat.

4. Power Charging & Data Transfer Function of Garmin 305

Garmin Forerunner 305 comes with a small cradle housed with a mini-USB port. This USB port can be used for transfer my running data to my PC. The cool thing is it can also be used to charge the Garmin 305 connecting via this USB connection from the PC. That means I need not to look for another power point.

5. Tracking Function of Garmin Forerunner 305

As I have mentioned couple of times, I was rather pleased and glad that even when I was running under densely shaded path, Garmin 305 could still track accurately and remain “lock-on”. Most of my runs are trail running across different arena and parts of it are densely shaded by tall and big trees. If Forerunner 305′s tracking system could not function well under this type of condition, it would not be very useful to me then. I am glad it does and does very well.

6. GPS Function of Garmin 305

Garmin 305 GPS Function

Garmin 305 has the mapping, waypoint marking, and routing capabilities. I can use it to mark locations alone my running route. And with the “Go To Location” feature, I can go back to the location I desire, thus I will not get lost. Now, I am dared to venture into unfamiliar route without the fear of losing my way back.

7. Data Capturing Function of Garmin 305

Garmin 305 can capture and display a lot of data including calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, and heading, as well as multiple lap and pace. Garmin 305 can also track heart-rate, lap heart-rate, average heart-rate, and heart-rate zones via the included coded heart-rate chest strap. Forerunner 305 can be used for tracking bike performance too via a wireless cadence and speed meter. I have yet to try that.

8. Data Display Function of Garmin 305

As mentioned in my previous point, Garmin 305 can capture so much data, displaying such among of data on the screen can be a challenge, but Garmin 305 does a beautiful job by allowing you to easily define how much or how little data you want to view. I love the customization of display to my liking.

9. Heart Rate Monitoring Function of Garmin Forerunner 305

Garmin 305 not only tracks my heart rate, it also allows me to set the target zones and alerts, so that I would know when to slow down and when to pick up my pace. Thus, minimizing the risk.

10. Virtual Partner function of Garmin 305

Garmin 305 Virtual Partner

I am a lone runner. I prefer to run by myself so that I could set my own pace, time and running route though once in a while I enjoy running in a group. With this function, I could set up a virtual running partner to compete against me. This is kind of cool.

If you are a cyclist or biker, you can set it up as a virtual biking companion to compete against you.

11. Interval Workout Function of Garmin 305

Garmin 305 Workout Function

Just like my Gymboss Interval Timer, Garmin 305 allows me to set my Run-Walk-Run training. Thus with Forerunner 305, I need not to carry my Gymboss Interval Timer anymore. Well, the less than $20 Gymboss Interval Timer had served me well before 305 came into my life. Good and faithful servant.

12. Performance Analysis Function of Garmin 305

This is something that can be very addictive. After each run, I upload all the data to Garmin website and all my performance graphs are produced. With this analysis, I could tell where are my strength and weaknesses of my run and thus I know how to plan to improve my next run. After every run, I just can’t wait to upload all my running data to the Net. Yes, I mentioned this can be addictive, didn’t I?

13. Garmin Forerunner 305 is Waterproof & Easy to Use

Garmin 305 is waterproof and easy to use. Some of the more advanced and complicated functions require more time to study and set up, but it should not be a too difficult a task. I have yet to explore and use all the function. Will come to that one day.

Buy Garmin Forerunner 305

Garmin Forerunner 305 Is My New Love

Trail Running with Garmin Forerunner 305

I used to see people running with a GPS Watch though it might not be a Garmin Running Watch, some even used a Distance-Tracking Foot Pod or a Heart-Rate Monitor, I was always amazed by their zeal in tracking their performance.

They will upload their running data to their computers after each run to analyze the statistics. I said “What For?”

I have a friend who uses a Garmin Forerunner 405 to monitor his performance. Since he bought this Forerunner 405, he started running more often especially during the first week.

After each run he would enthusiastically upload all the data into his computer and he would show me all his analysis on his running with a proud smile.

And he claims that this Garmin 405 had helped his training to be more performance-focused and he got more motivated for each run.

“Hey”, I said “Wouldn’t this take away the fun from running?” I was not interested at all!

By the way, I did not like the look of Garmin Forerunner 405, it was so ordinary, just like any other watch. I am a gadget guy I like things that look different. That’s me.

By the way, here is how Garmin Forerunner 405CX looks like:

Garmin Forerunner 405CX

Until one day I stepped into a sport shop, that young gentleman showed me the Garmin Forerunner 305. Wow, that’s cool.

And he told me that I could use the Garmin 305 to map my thrice weekly run and it could provide great details, like the distance, my average and maximum speed, and with this data, I could improving my consistency and timing etc.

Well, I was Sold! I BOUGHT it.

Life after Garmin Forerunner 305

This Forerunner 305 is really quite fun to use and truly I am now very motivated for each run, because after each run I just can’t wait to upload all my running data to the Garmin’s website and see how well I have run.

I am a trail runner, I hate to run on the road, but the problem with trail running is it is very difficult to track the distance I run because there are slopes, up slopes, down slopes and my runner speed can thus be very inconsistent. With my new Garmin Forerunner 305, I do not have such challenge anymore because it tracks my distance and my running speed.

Knowing with accuracy how far and fast I was running, I can analyze my run and find ways to improve my timing. Now I have created a running log on my computer to keep track of all the information of each of my run.

And truly, with these stats, they are very motivating and in fact, addicting.

By the way, Garmin Forerunner 305 looks really cool and sleek. Here is a picture of Garmin Forerunner 305.

Garmin Forerunner 305

Oh, Garmin has come out with a newer version Garmin Forerunner 310XT. It looks similar to the Garmin 305 but with more function.

Garmin Forerunner 310XT

If you read my previous post on Running Metronome you would know that I changed my running technique from Heel-Stride to Forefoot-Stride some years back. During my first month, my calf and legs were so painful during and after my run.

There were times for one whole week I found it so painful to even walk a short distance. I understood that there were a lot of people injured themselves when they switched from Heel-Stride to Forefoot -Stride and the main reason was they were too impatient or too ambitious.

So, I did not force myself to keep training when there was pain but instead, I gave my legs enough rest before I continued for the next training session. I rested for 2 full weeks before I resumed my training. I believe that is very important to prevent your our from further injuries.

Stay Patient and listen to your body are the keys to prevent injuries. After about a month’s time, there was not so much pain when I run. By the way, this is the Runner’s World Run Less, Run Faster method that I have learnt.

After 1 month of running with the Seiko Running Metronome using the forefoot stride, I could run for 1 mile though the timing was worse than before the switch. I pressed on. In fact I was still searching for the landing point, stride length, and stride frequency that suit me best.

After another 2 months, then I finally settled download with the running pose that I was most comfortable with. My timing was still not close to what used to have. It took me another 2 months to close the gap. I was then could run up to 5k quite comfortably.

I would like to encourage all my readers to be patient with the switch to forefoot stride. It takes time and please do not rush yourself. If you over stretch your running or training, at the end you might find yourself spending more time recovering from injuries.

Very importantly is to listen to your body before, during and after your run. I do not put on the ear phone or listen to the mp3. I pay alot of attention to each stride. Like where my landing point, my running pose, my breathing etc.

In total of 5 months (Yes, you hear it right, 5 Months) I could run very comfortably 5k without any pain or discomfort to my body and legs. It was really a very nice feeling. I was feeling so free, light and happy when I reached that state. I could run up slope so swiftly, no panting and no pain, I felt like there were springs underneath my feet.

When I moved on to 10k run and beyond, I realised I could not keep my pace at 180 stride per minute throughout the whole of 20k run, guess it is partly of my age. I am into my 40s. At the end of my 20k run, I would feel so tired and exhausted. In fact, towards the end of the 20k, my pace slowed down tremendously but I told myself not to stop, I kept pushing on without realising indeed I was running very slowly then.

Run-Walk-Run Method by Jeff Galloway

End of last year, I read a book “Running Until You Are 100″ by Jeff Galloway. He teaches the Run-Walk-Run technique. It simply means you run for say 1 minute then walk for 15 seconds before you resume the next 1 minute run. I tried out Jeff’s method, I found that it was quite effective. In Jeff’s book, it includes a training program, so I followed that program and within 1 month, I could run the 10k without feeling that tired and exhausted at the end of the 10k run.

I do not follow Jeff’s technique 100% though. I run for 10 minutes at 180 stride per minute then slow down for 15 seconds before I pick up the pace for the next 10 minutes. That means I do not stop to walk but that short 15 seconds is enough to restore and recharge my energy to run at high speed again. It changed my belief. I always thought I should not stop and walk during my run because I would not be able to pick up the speed again, but I am glad that I was wrong.

Interval Timer

Okay, you might ask do I keep looking at my watch to know when to slow down and when to pick up my speed again? No, that will take away the joy from my run if I keep looking at my watch. I used a gadget called the Interval Timer. This Interval Training Timer is something like a Stop Watch where people used for their Circuit Training. Thus, some call it Gym Timer or Workout Timer.

With the help of this Workout Timer, people in the workout program (particularly the Crossfit training) perform high intensity exercise for say 3 minutes, rest for 45 seconds and resume another round of high intensity exercise.

With this Interval Timer, I can set two timings. When I hear the first beep, I slow down, when I hear the second beep I pick up my speed. The timing or even the tune can be set according to your liking (or vibration mode). Of course I would not be using my Seiko Running Metronome and the Interval Timer at the same time. Now, I am quite comfortable with my pace and I can very well manage my speed at around 180 stride per minute without using the metronome.

Gymboss Interval Timer

I did my research and found out that the Gymboss Internal Timer is the most popular and highly recommended Interval Timer used by well-known physical trainers. By the way, do not buy the Interval Timer from Jeff’s website., I bought mine at Amazon, not only it is cheaper but they look nicer and more models to choose from.

What I like about the Gymboss Interval Timer is that it is easy to set up, hardy and light. It even has a Stop Watch function.

With the Gymboss Interval Timer, I find my running is more fun now as there is variety in my run. I know I can get a rest (15 seconds of slow run) after going high speed (higher than 180 stride per minute, sometimes, I reach 200 stride per minute) for 10 minutes. That is not one speed last the whole of 10k run (can be boring at time).

And amazingly, with this Fast-Slow-Fast running pattern, my timing has improved. I did not expect the short slow run will inject energy into my run and I could pick up the fast speed again just after a 15 second ‘rest’.

Now, with this Gymboss Interval Timer, I am moving on to half marathon and maybe eventually run the full marathon. I am into my late 40s, if I can do it, so can you.

>>> Click Here to get the Gymboss Interval Timer <<<

Barefoot Running with Metronome

Running with a Metronome will help you to run faster, longer, farther and fewer injuries.

Most people think that running is a training sport and not a skill sport. That means in order to run faster, longer and farther, the harder one should train. Some say that you just put on your running shoes, and run. Some say that just run naturally as long as you are comfortable.

When people pick up the sport of golf, they go for lesson to learn how to perform a proper swing. When people want to play a good game of tennis, they want to learn how to hit the ball correctly with their forehand and backhand. Running is no different from these sports. There is such a thing called the Good Running Form.

Many people tend to look at VO2 max (Maximum Oxygen Consumption) and lactate threshold but have little knowledge of Running Efficiency or Running Economy. Running Efficiency means utilizing our energy in the most efficient manner possible when running, this will enable us to run faster, longer and farther.

According to Joe Friel (Evolution Running) when we run, energy is spent on the following activities:

1. Propulsion-

Energy required to move a runner forward. The more the energy used to move the runner forward, the faster the runner will run.

2. Vertical Displacement-

Energy spent to move the runner upwards during his stride cycle. This is wasted energy as it does not move the runner forward.

3. Support-

Energy required holding the runner up. The higher the runner’s center of gravity moves up, the move energy is required to support his body when it comes down during foot stride. This is closely tied with the vertical displacement.

4. Acceleration-

This is the power required to accelerate the runner’s body back to running speed after momentum is loss during stride cycle.

5. Balance-

The energy to keep the runner’s mass over his support, his feet and legs. Well balanced runner will require less energy to run fast.

6. Limb Movement-

Efficient runners minimize energy expenditure moving his arms and legs.

In order to run efficiently, we need to minimize the energy spent. One of the ways to achieve it is to look at our Stride Length and Stride Frequency. Efficient runners take relatively short and quick stride at any running speed. Most runners make the mistake of over-stride, ie. taking steps that are too long and too slow for the speed they are running.

Purpose of Using a Running Metronome

Running metronome can help to address both the Stride Length and Stride Frequency problem. When the Stride Frequency goes up, naturally the Stride Length will have to be shorten, else one will run out of breath quickly.

By increasing the Stride Frequency, the runner with no choice but has to touch the ground very briefly. Hence, less energy wasted. According to research done by Jack Daniels (Daniels’ Running Formula), the 180 strides per minute is the most efficient Stride Frequency. This is where the Running Metronome could help us to achieve this objective.

A Running Metronome is a small digital metronome which can be clipped on to our running shorts when we go running. It can be set to beep from 30 to 250 beats per minute. With this metronome for running (of course it can also be used for practicing piano, violin, drum and other musical instrument), we can set the speed to 180 beats per minute and adjust our running cadence accordingly.

How To Use A Running Metronome To Improve Your Running Efficiency?

Firstly, the recommended approach is to start off our running with the metronome at our usual Stride Frequency and up it by 1 to 3 beats per week until it reaches 180 strides per minute. For example if we start off with 170, we can increase it to 173 beats per minutes at our very first run, and add 1 to 3 beats every subsequent week. Most importantly, listen to your body to decide how many beats/minute to add. By the way, you should be able to adjust the Beat & Rhythm Accents of your running metronome to suit your preference.

Initially, you might find it awkward to run according to the beep sound coming out from your running metronome, but once you get used to it and achieved the 180 stride per minutes stride frequency, you will find yourself running faster, longer, farther, and less tired. That is running efficiency or running economy. Remember not to be too ambitious. Start with a slower pace and be patient.

Secondly, in order to increase your running frequency, as I mentioned earlier, you will be force to touch the ground very briefly at every stride, and this will force you to do forefoot stride. This is what people do barefoot running practice. The good thing about forefoot stride is that it is not only helping you to run faster but also to avoid injury which happens to a lot of heel-stride runners.

Remember not to be too ambitious. Doing forefoot stride will force you to use those muscle which are hardly used when you were doing heel-stride. You might want to start off your Running Frequency slower than your usual rate. For example, if you usual stride frequency is 170 strides/minute, you might want to start off with 160 strides/minute. The key is to Go Slow in order to Go Fast later.

Thirdly, in order to increase your stride frequency, minimize your hand movement. You will notice if you keep your arms forward and backward movement to the minimum, you would be able to increase your stride rate easily. Didn’t you realize, your arms and legs have to work hand in hand. By the way, do NOT swing your arms across your chest, it is a total waste of energy.

And never use your arm swing to increase your speed or force yourself to move forward when you are feeling tired. Your arms are for balancing purposes. Therefore, when you are going up slope or down hill, you don’t swing your arms according to your strides, you use them to balance your body and movement.

Fourthly, make sure your point of landing is just below your center of body mass. That means do NOT land in front of your body, because by doing so, there is a braking effect involved and again it is not only a waste of energy, it hurts your knees.

Lastly, since we are doing the forefoot stride, we are landing on our ball of foot (BOF), and many people tend to move forward by using their toes to push themselves forward; or by extending/straightening their legs. By doing this, it causes extra stress on our Achilles tendon and calf, and these muscles might tear.

The correct way is to use our thigh muscle or hamstring to lift our leg up and forward. Remember, just lift our leg high enough to cross over the possible obstacle and not any higher than that. And the strength to move our body forward comes from our hamstring and the muscle behind our buttock. Minimize your upper body movement and focus on using your lower body (hamstring and buttock muscle) to move your legs faster in order to move forward in a higher speed.

Another tips on increasing your speed is to lean your body slightly forward, that means the center of mass will be slightly in front of your point of stride. This will give you a feeling of falling forward, and thus force your leg to move forward faster in order to support your falling body. Please take note, this is NOT to bend your upper body forward.

Below is a video showing Dr. Nicholas Romanov’s Pose Method of Running.
